A Ford pickup truck struck the pedestrian in a crosswalk, who has now been identified as an NC State assistant professor, 41-year-old Natalia Duque-Wilckens, according to reports by WRAL, ABC11 and CBS17.
Police were called to the scene last night around 6:10 p.m. where they found Duque-Wilckens lying in the road with significant injuries. Duque-Wilckens was transported to the hospital where she later died.
She was an assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at NC State.

According to her bio posted on the university department’s website, her research centered around “identifying novel neuro-mechanisms that underlie emotional regulation. Through her research she hoped to “create new therapeutic tools for the prevention and/or treatment of depression and anxiety.”
Duque-Wilckens earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Chile in 2010 and her Ph.D in Animal Behavior from the University of California at Davis in 2017. She had been a professor at NC State since 2022.
