NC State second-year student Brayden Bulger is recovering in the hospital following a hit-and-run in Hilton Head, S.C. at roughly 1:50 a.m. Sunday. The driver reportedly sent Bulger flying 10 to 15 feet through the air before leaving the scene, according to reporting from The News & Observer and WTOC in South Carolina.
Friends of Bulger and fellow members of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity have started a GoFundMe, aiming to raise money for Bulger’s family and recovery. As of Thursday evening, the campaign sits at $49,335, 90% of its goal with 770 donations.
Bulger suffered severe injuries, including a traumatic brain injury.
“Brayden’s family is facing a long road ahead as he recovers from a traumatic brain injury, among several other serious injuries. The emotional toll is immense. Every day brings new challenges as they work to support Brayden through this difficult time. Supporting Brayden means helping his family ensure he gets the care he needs,” the GoFundMe reads.
The driver has not yet been identified. South Carolina Highway Patrol released an image of what they believed to be the suspect in the hit-and-run, driving either a gray or silver SUV. A flier from highway patrol with more information can be found here.
North Street Beer Station, a Glenwood bar, called Bulger a “great kid,” and “part of our team,” in a Facebook post. The bar will be donating a portion of sales to Bulger Friday night beginning at 5 p.m., along with the release of a limited edition t-shirt to support Bulger.
In an email statement to Technician, Gavin Laton, a third-year studying human biology and president of Sigma Phi Epsilon, said Bulger’s condition is improving every day.
The community can support Bulger and his family by donating to Bulger’s GoFundMe and keeping him and his family in mind, Laton added.
“This past weekend in Hilton Head, one of our brothers was involved in a hit-and-run. He is currently in the hospital with serious injuries. He is recovering every day, but it will be a long road. The brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon were devastated by the news, but so glad to hear he is getting better every day,” the statement read.
Laton said another way the community can support Bulger during this time is to report any information to law enforcement.
“Brayden is one of the purest guys I know. He is so kind and always has a positive attitude. We ask that everyone keep Brayden and his family in their prayers as he continues his recovery journey,” Laton’s statement said. “We have a GoFundMe for Brayden, which can be found on the [Sigma Phi Epsilon] Instagram. We are in good spirits, given his improving condition each day. The driver is still at large, and if there is any info, please report to law enforcement.”
