Despite inclement weather cancelling the second day of NC State track and field’s competitions, it showed out on Friday in the Brant Tolsma Elite Invite and the Bob Pollock Invitational with 13 top-10 finishes across multiple events, including two second-place finishes.
At the Brant Tolsma Elite Invite in Lynchburg, Virginia, freshman sensation Saide Engelhardt placed second in the mile invite with a time of 4:32.71, breaking both the meet and facility records during the race.
The momentum only built in the 3000m as senior Hannah Gapes took second place and graduate Brooke Rauber took sixth place with times of 9:04.56 and 9:11.03, respectively, both clearing meet and facility records just like Engelhardt did. As if that wasn’t enough, Gapes’ run placed her at No. 20 for NCAA Division I 3000m times this season.
The 3000m proved to be just as strong on the men’s side as freshmen Michael Haskin and James Callahan and sophomore Brayden Marshall took fourth, sixth and eighth-place respectively.
In the weight throw, junior Natalie Griffith took seventh in the women’s event with a 16.83m throw, while junior Tony Taylor II took eighth in the men’s event with an 18.60m throw.
At the Bob Pollock Invitational in Clemson, South Carolina, senior Elyssia Fisher took sixth-place with a 6.02m finish in the long jump — a personal best — and moved to No. 9 on NC State’s all-time top-10 list. Not far behind was sophomore Mariama Hunt, who took ninth place with a 5.86m jump.
In the men’s 400m, junior Elijah Dawes took fifth place with a time of 46.50, the second-fastest time in the event in program history. Though junior Christian Parker took 12th with a time of 47.17, it placed him right behind Dawes on the all-time list at No. 3.
Next up, the Wolfpack returns to Virginia Tech yet again for the VT Doc Hale Invite Feb. 6-7, and the distance athletes travel to Winston-Salem for the Camel City Distance Feb. 7.
