NC State track and field’s trip to the ACC Indoor Championships was replete with personal-bests and first-place performances.
The Wolfpack took to Boston, Massachusetts, to compete inside The Track at New Balance, a state-of-the-art indoor facility. NC State started strong with a second-place finish in the women’s DMR, recording a time of 10:52.59. First-place Duke was just 14-hundredths of a second ahead.
That’s the same time that freshman Sadie Engelhardt — who ran the 1600m leg of the DMR — left between her and second place when she took gold in the women’s mile. Her time of 4:32.59 was short of the ACC record that she set at the ASICS Sounds Invite in February.
Sophomore Bethany Michalak also competed in the mile, and took ninth place with a time of 4:38.81.
NC State filled out the women’s 3000m, placing two athletes in the top five. Junior Angelina Napoleon earned second with a time of 8:56.75, while junior Hannah Gapes was just behind her in fifth. Gapes, the ACC Performer of the Year in cross country, notched a season-best time of 8:57.95.
Engelhardt wasn’t the only member of the Pack to earn first place in an event. She was joined by junior Tyson Adams, who took first place in the men’s long jump for a second year in a row. The former USTFCCCA First-Team All-American didn’t beat the mark he set last year, but his season-best 7.67m jump still cleared the field.
In the men’s triple jump, senior Ryan John earned fifth place with a personal best of 15.59m on his final jump. The Clemson transfer has had a strong season, clearing 15.50m in three finals.
Junior Judd Armstrong and senior Kyzaiah Stone placed fifth and eighth in the high jump, respectively. They both cleared 2.08m, but Stone took two more jumps to record the mark.
Overall, the men finished in 13th place and the women finished in 11th place.
The Wolfpack looks ahead to the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on March 13, where its women’s DMR team will be a top contender in the field.
