Mordecai Mengesteab, a third-year student and current senator for the College of Engineering, prevailed over Lalith Nandula, a senator from the College of Sciences, in the race for student senate president.
Mengesteab’s campaign focused on making Student Government more effective while engaging in political activism. He took a more combative approach to administration during the student government debate on March 2.
The race for student treasurer advanced to a runoff, with Aleena Kollu winning 48.40% of the vote compared to Mikiya Hedgepeth’s 38.19%. The runoff election is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.
However, in an email statement to Technician, Hedgepeth dropped out of the race, making Kollu the presumptive treasurer-elect.
“I’m incredibly proud of the campaign my team and I ran over the past two weeks. After seeing the results and thinking about the well-being of myself and my team, I’ve made the decision to withdraw from the runoff. I’m grateful for everyone who supported this campaign, and I’ll continue showing up for this community— [student body officer] or not,” Hedgepeth said.
Results for the student body president and vice president elections were not announced. A stay was placed on the election by Student Government Chief Justice Colin Carmichael, pending an appeal hearing for the recent disqualification of candidates Taquan Dewberry and Ava Butler.
